Press The Chicago Reader This Chicago-made video centers on a support group for gay men of color; the six members discuss barebacking, fidelity, bisexuality, etc. This is the second installment in a series, funded in part by the Chicago Department of Health, intended to promote HIV awareness. The educational agenda results in some stiff moments ("But why should I get an HIV test?" "Well, let me tell you four good reasons..."), but the talented actors do a good job of selling the material and codirectors Sharon Zurek and Lora Branch strike a nice balance between didacticism and drama. By the cliff-hanger ending I cared enough to want to know what happened next. 60 min. News: We are proud to tell you that Kevin's Room has made history in Oakland, California -- at The Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. This is the first time a project has won two First Place awards - First Place in Television Special (we tied with Tim Reid - now that's very flattering) and First Place in Health. The screening and award ceremony took place in Oakland on December 1, 2001.
The one-hour film tells the story of five black gay men struggling with issues related to community, identity, and HIV. Black Cat Productions, along with the Chicago Department of Public Health, initially produced this film as an HIV/AIDS educational tool for gay and bisexual men of color in Chicago. The film has moved beyond the windy city, however, and has been on the film circuit for over a year, speaking to the experiences of black gay men across the country. "Kevin's Room" is the story of Kevin, a black social worker, who obtains grant money to start a gay men's support group. After suffering through a dearth of participants, three men -- Pharaoh, Teddy, and Paris -- arrive to participate one evening. Through their discussions and as their relationships grow, the film delves deeper into issues of HIV testing, AIDS, relationships, and sexual risk- taking in the lives of black gay men. Well received in North Carolina, "Kevin's Room" has also aired on channel 50 (WPMR-V) in Chicago, and was screened at the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the 2001 New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. In October it will be screened at the Tampa Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Contributing editor: L.S. SILVA. An Instructor at the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City.
