Kevin's Room is the story of five African American gay men, each of whom struggles with common issues related to our community, family and each other. Through participation ina support group, each of the men learn valuable lessons and change in ways that will forever impact their lives.

Kevin, a young African American social worker, receives a small grant to start a gay men's support group. Recruiting men to participate however has been difficulat and his job is in jeopardy. One evening he is pleasantly surprised by the arrival of three group participants. Charles and Pharaoh, motivated by a recent hate crime, and Teddy, a Christian student whose impending wedding to his childhood sweetheart is causing him apprehension and indecisiveness.

Paris, a 30 something waiter and diva-type barfly, is a figure who looms in the background. Through his association with streetwise Pharaoh we see an acerbically curious critic of the group. On several occasions, Pharaoh attempts to recruit Paris to the group. Paris grows increasingly irritated and reminds a recovering Pharaoh that he should not be "preaching to the masses" just yet, referring to him as a "messy girl". Meanwhile Pharaoh who struggles with issues of STD's and sexual risk-taking is finding a new sense of male connectedness in the group.

Charles, an attractive professional, is living with HIV. Through several phone conversations with his mother we find out about his health, medication regimes, and gerneal anxiety about living with HIV. Throughout the film he contemplates a "drug holiday". He has a sobering discussion with his Doctor and eventually makes a difficult decision. Aftter Kevin comes to group one evening with a raging cold, Charles scolds him for being so naive and inconsiderate. Charles discloses his HIV status then sarcastically challenges kevin by asking if he'd been tested lately. A totally embarrassed Kevin is silent.

Kevin's partner Jhalil is a sharp but nurturing attorney who clearly enjoys their domestic bliss in the couple's upscale urban home. The relationship is monogamous, communicative and loving until Kevin reveals in a pivotal scene that he has lied to Jahalil about his HIV status. Kevin confesses that although they were both tested two years prior, he never went back to the clinic to receive his results. Jhalil is enraged. Kevin tries in vain to assuage him by saying that he just took a test and is certain that he is negative. An irate Jhalil storms out of the room but first ensures Kevin that he will personally escort him to the clinic to get the results. Jhalil turns icy and emotionally distances himself from Kevin.

Meanwhile, Teddy who has gained strength through his partipation in the group musters courage to come out to his family pastor. The pastor is cold and leaves a sturggling Teddy sitting alone in the Church. Later Teddy comes out to Angela, his fiancée, who while shocked and saddened is still hopeful that they have a future together. Teddy tenderly but firmly ends their relationship.

Paris, who has been fired from his job for inappropriate behavior, has a heartfelt talk with his best friend Felicia. Felica warns Paris to slow down before his behavior catches up to him.She offers some friendly advice and a job lead. paris reluctantly takes it. Later Paris is the victim of a robbery. At a police statin he is treated apathetically. The next day paris shows up at the support group.

In the final scene, Kevin is at the clinic waiting for his results. J'halil is there with him as they wait to be called. The nurse calls Kevin's number and he walks slowly into the office.
